Thrifty Living in Carolina & Beyond - Are we having fun yet? Wow Columbia!!!

Thrifty Living in Carolina & Beyond - Are we having fun yet? Wow Columbia!!!

It’s summer time in South Carolina and without breaking the bank and going to Carowinds there is many fun things one can do close to home. Since Columbia is in the middle of the state and does have some public transportation – take the bus.

With the State House there (although they are out of session) it’s a great way to see politics up close and it’s free. You can then go to Wendy’s up the hill for a low cost meal but there are also other food options in the area.

For free or low cost music it’s good to check with the “liturgical” churches as they sometimes have a classical concert as well as free tours.

For free food and a look at real life for some you can dine at a soup kitchen and mingle with those that life has given them a rough turn. In the end you can maybe see it’s a place for you to volunteer or get an idea how to help others. Christ Central Mission Station (803) 765-1998 2401 Main St, Columbia, SC 29201 who feed at 12 Noon Monday – Friday. Christ Central founded by Jimmy Jones could always use a good volunteer as well as funds. Christ Central is a unique mission better than a “church” whose sole purpose is to help those who truly need help. (Ones that the “church” won’t give real help to.)

When schmoozing around don’t look like a tourist with camera around your neck and a tourist attitude. Do a web search and check “The State” newspaper http://www.thestate.com/ for ideas. You don’t have to spend a lot to have a great day out and maybe if you get out of the comfort of your car, life will be more real to you and those who are with you. Bank of America is right down town do you have access to an ATM if you need.

In West Columbia there is a neat used book store called Ed's Editions who has a neat little website for further info go to http://www.edseditions.com/ although their website does not have a lot of content but a stop will inform you of what is there but you can always call them at 803-791-8002 or toll-free 1-866-791-8002.

There are also other good used book stores in Columbia area and I found them in Yahoo link here to see.

When in Columbia you got to go to Riverbanks Zoo. http://www.riverbanks.org/ The best way to see the Zoo is an annual pass and thriftiest way to go. You could go every day for less than a day’s pay.

https://tickets.riverbanks.org/mainstore.asp# and is a cool way to spend the day or even volunteer http://www.riverbanks.org/jointeam/volunteer.shtml.

As for a good unique place to eat is Bangkok Restaurant at 7509-H Garners Ferry Rd.
Columbia, SC 29209 Phone: (803) 776-2993 I have eaten their many times and if you like Thai food this is a great place to go. Tell them WebmasterSanta sent you.

For other places in Columbia to go check out Columbia Metropolitan Convention & Visitors Bureau at http://www.columbiacvb.com/

This has not been a complete list of all the things you can do in the Columbia area and is not meant to but a framework to get you the reader to think of other options to see and do that is not the high traffic norm, but are thrifty.

If you are not in the Columbia area ask around for thrifty places to visit in your community like here in Orangeburg with the Rose Garden at Edisto Memorial Garden etc. a great place to visit and read a book or just feed the ducks.

Always when possible go with others for as always it’s safer to go in a group, know where you are going and be aware of your surroundings and those around you. Be safe and have Fun!

You can do web searches via http://www.GoldenChinaOnline.com as well as a place to check Carolina weather etc.
